In Service – “Give Up”

In all honesty this is the first project I’d listened to from In Service. I’d always seen clips on his Facebook of him jamming out, but had no idea there was a comprehensive body of work he’d released. He went out of his way to shoot me a link to this project the other day and I just recently was able to sit down and give it an honest listen. I actually used to work with him at Down in the Valley record store in Golden Valley, MN. Really an exceptional human being. Hard working, creative, and humble.

Off rip Give Up has a very thematic vibe. As stated in his artist bio, In Service truly does “write music for the films that only exist in [his] heart and [his] head.” This cinematic and climactic feel permeates the album. Songs like “Futurism” build an almost unbreakable tension until giving way to gentler, more laid back tracks like “Distance” and “Silent Cities.” The album is a roller-coaster of emotion, which is relatable for most of us during these unprecedented times.
