Album Review – Wiz Khalifa “Laugh Now, Fly Later”

Wiz Khalifa has been in the game for over 10 years now, and he continues to deliver new material consistently. With 14 mixtapes, 5 studio albums, and another on the way, Wiz has no shortage of material, yet somehow with each new release, he manages to give us something new. Wiz’s older work pays homage to some of his favorites, combining elements of East Coast Hip-Hop with Dirty South Trap, but he also displays incredible range, working with artists as diverse as Snoop Dogg and Juicy J to Maroon 5 and Miley Cyrus.

Wiz’s latest mixtape, Laugh Now, Fly Later, works to develop his own style even further, letting us into his head and giving us a glimpse of what he’s been up to, but it also shows us why Wiz has been here as long as he has. Within only 10 songs, a relatively short Wiz Khalifa project, Laugh Now, Fly Later, but manages to provide something for everyone of Wiz’s fans.

For the fan wanting more of Wiz’s hard hitting snares, bangin’ 808’s, and swaggering flows, “Letterman”, “No Dirt”, and “Weed Farm” are the songs to listen to. Nostalgically reminiscent of Cabin Fever, these tracks slap and create and energy that will keep everyone reppin’ TG till death. Wiz has always been able to cater to each of his fans on a near personal level, being in the game as long as he has, he should have a good idea of what his fans want. For the fans of Wiz’s more melodic and delicate music, songs like “Roll Up” or “See You Again”, Wiz has delivered. Tracks 3, 4, and 10 provide what you want.

Laugh Now, Fly Later is Wiz Khalifa’s most recent mixtape, and is meant to hold us over until the long awaited Rolling Papers 2 is released. Wiz has definitely come a long way since repping Pittsburgh on “Black and Yellow”, but his journey is certainly not over yet. At 30 years old, Wiz is a veteran in the game, but he continues to change it with each new project and define himself even further.
